The family is based on duality — building tension through contradicting poles: elegance vs brutalism and high contrast vs angularity. I have prepared an emulsion of non-soluble components, a fine dispersion of minute droplets of one liquid in another. The result is a dualistic nectar of counteracting forces. Alchemy? Not really. A process deploying sitting muscles? Totally. Graphic designer Martin Martonen was testing Arctica during the process.
I’m one of the few type designers who has completed Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). I studied for four years at departments where type designers were teaching me, among other things, type design — resulting in a foundational knowledge of contrast, rhythm and proportion and high awareness of the field. Coming from Finland, I have industry experience working with Dinamo and R-Typography. I’m a music nerd and an occasional boulder climber.
